DUI Accident FAQs
Among many consequences from car accidents, one of the most inconvenient a driver experiences are the loss of a vehicle. Being left without transportation after a wreck can throw your life into utter chaos. Many may not understand what to do with their destroyed vehicle after an accident.
If it is possible to drive the car, the law enforcement officer will likely find someone you know who is willing to drive the vehicle to your house or to a repair facility. If the vehicle cannot be driven, towing arrangements will have to be made. As a courtesy, the law enforcement officials will arrange for your vehicle to be towed. Do not forget to ask where the vehicle is being taken. The at-fault driver’s insurance company will pay reasonable towing and storage costs of your car. As long as the insurance companies are determining whether your car is a “total loss,” they will continue to pay the storage costs. They will move the car from the repair shop to a wrecking yard or a free storage area if the insurance company declares the car a “total loss.”
If you refuse to allow the insurance company to move your car, you will be forced to pay storage from that day forward. You can choose to keep the vehicle, but you’re responsible for paying to have it towed to the place of your choosing. BE CAREFUL! If there is a dispute as to how the accident happened, the insurance company may further investigate the details of the accident. During this time, storage fees can get costly, and in some cases may become your responsibility.
